Active Directory:

It is a top solution for providing directory services.

- AD DS — Domain Services, how employees log into Windows 

- AD LDS — Lightweight Directory Services 

- AD CS — Certificate Services, public key infrastructure (PKI) 

- AD FS — Federation Services, for single sign-on 

- AD RMS — Rights Management Services, for protecting documents 

Azure AD is not a replacement for on-prem AD.It is just windows AD migrated to cloud.

- Azure AD provides identity management centered around users and groups 

- Does not contain the same hierarchical object model that AD has 

- Azure AD exists to extend your on-prem AD into the cloud 

- Would not recommend replacing your current on-prem AD with Azure AD 

- If you don't have or use AD at all, Azure AD provides basic identity management
